Practical Validation - Controlled Testing
Digital Penetration Test
Cocoon tests not only your physical security but also whether your digital applications and infrastructure can withstand a targeted (hybrid) attack.
- Targeted testing of applications, networks, and infrastructure, from an exploratory scan to a comprehensive test
- Part of an integrated approach, together with physical and organizational security
- Report with concrete, priority-driven improvement measures
What is a Digital Penetration Test?
A digital penetration test is a controlled attempt, with the client’s permission, to breach digital systems, applications, or networks, to uncover vulnerabilities in digital security before a malicious actor does.
Cocoon offers digital penetration testing as an addition to our core physical services, for organizations that want their security comprehensively assessed: physically, organizationally, and digitally. This service is relevant when there are doubts about the digital resilience of applications or infrastructure, after the introduction of new systems, or as part of a broader program that maps physical and digital vulnerabilities in conjunction.

How a Digital Penetration Test Works at Cocoon
For many specialized cyber firms, digital security remains disconnected from the physical and human aspects of an organization, even though vulnerabilities often reinforce each other: a physically unsecured server room makes a digital attack easier, and vice versa. Therefore, Cocoon prefers to test digital vulnerabilities in conjunction with your broader security, not as an isolated report.
A digital penetration test also follows our established setup. During preparation, we jointly define the scope, ranging from a targeted test of a single application to a broader test of infrastructure and network, and establish the Rules of Engagement. During execution, our specialists actively search for vulnerabilities within the agreed-upon parameters and without unnecessary disruption to your digital environment.
After execution, a debriefing follows where we immediately explain the findings. Finally, you receive a report detailing vulnerabilities, risk assessment, and concrete, priority-driven improvement measures, so you know what to address first.
Why choose Cocoon
Cocoon is fundamentally a physical security partner. We offer digital penetration testing because security doesn’t stop at the front door: those who have physical and digital vulnerabilities assessed together gain a more complete picture than with separate projects from different parties.
Not a vendor of individual tests, but your long-term partner in security awareness.
We never assess security measures we’ve implemented ourselves, ensuring our findings remain independent and objective.
- Independent validation, separate from provided security systems
- Digital testing in conjunction with your physical and organizational security
- A single point of contact for an integrated overview, instead of separate reports from different parties
Please note: under NIS2 and the General Security Requirements for Central Government Commissions (ABRO), actual testing of security measures is required.
Performing a digital penetration test helps meet the requirements of NIS 2 and ABRO.
Cocoon works for renowned (publicly) listed companies in profit and non-profit environments; references are available upon request.
Frequently asked questions
How Much Does a Digital Penetration Test Cost?
The cost of a digital penetration test depends on the scope, for example, a single application or your entire infrastructure, and the chosen depth. Following the intake, you will receive a tailored quote.
How Long Does a Digital Penetration Test Take?
A digital penetration test typically takes one to several weeks, from intake to reporting, depending on the scope.
Is a Digital Penetration Test Legal?
Yes. A digital penetration test is exclusively conducted with the client’s written authorization, within predefined Rules of Engagement. These frameworks ensure that the test proceeds lawfully and in a controlled manner.
What is the Difference Between a Digital and a Physical Penetration Test?
A physical penetration test assesses whether someone can gain access to buildings, premises, or processes. A digital penetration test assesses whether someone can gain access to your applications, networks, or digital infrastructure. Both can be conducted independently, but they provide the most comprehensive insights when combined.
Does Cocoon also test my applications and network separately?
Yes. The scope is determined per assignment, ranging from a targeted test of a single application to a broader test of your infrastructure and network.
Why should I have a digital penetration test performed by a physical security partner?
Because physical and digital vulnerabilities often reinforce one another. An unsecured server room or an employee plugging in an unknown device can facilitate a digital attack just as easily as a technical leak. Cocoon tests this correlation instead of viewing digital security in isolation.
Does a digital penetration test replace a physical penetration test?
No. The two test different risks and complement each other. For a complete picture of your resilience, we often recommend a combination of both.
